What size is your wind tunnel?
The tunnel is 4,3 meters in diameter and 15 meters high. Experienced sportflyers can fly up to 12 meters above the ground.
What is a vertical wind tunnel?
A recreational vertical wind tunnel moves air upward in a vertical column, making it possible to simulate freefall. The flying feels similar to jumping out of an airplane at 4,000 meters. Vertical wind tunnels are used by professional skydivers to optimize their training as well as by people who want to experience the sensation of freefall in a safe environment, for fun or for physical sport.
Can I wear my glasses during the indoor flight?
Yes you can. You will be provided with goggles under which you can wear your own glasses.
Can I have a normal meal before the indoor flight?
We recommend you have a lighter meal before you fly.
How is it possible to fly without a parachute?
WINDOBONA utilizes a recirculating wind tunnel in which four fans provide a laminar airflow. The resulting airspeed is comparable to the freefall speed achieved when skydiving from 4,000 meters. In our wind tunnel the airspeed is constant, keeping you afloat with absolutely no turbulence.
Just how high can I fly in your wind tunnel?
The WINDOBONA flight chamber is 15 meters high and 4,3 meters in diameter. First time flyers stay toward the bottom part of the wind tunnel, reaching a maximum height of 4 meters. Flying higher than 4 meters requires a certain skill level that everybody can learn with additional flying time.
How can I influence the height at which I fly?
Our instructor will accompany you into the flight chamber to show you the basic bodyflight maneuvers. Affecting the height of your flight requires movement that includes the whole body. It is easy enough to learn and with a little practice, you will find you are able to control the level of your flight.
Do you regulate the airflow? Is it the same intensity for everyone?
The airflow is adapted for each individual participant. The flight chamber controller regulates the airspeed, varying it to reflect the individual flyer´s size, weight and bodyflight experience.
What is the maximum air or freefall speed in the wind tunnel?
On average, you will experience a freefall speed of 50 meters per second. Sportflyers using the facility for skydiving training are likely to work at speeds up to 70 meters per second. The integrated fans in WINDOBONA's tunnel are capable of moving 1,5 tons of air per second.
How do I get into the airflow to start my flight?
Flyers enter the airflow through a door at the base of the flight chamber. The flyer stands next to the airflow and then simply leans into it. You will feel how your legs are lifted and soon you will be flying in the so-called “belly” position. Our flight instructor will assist you during this entire process and, once you become accustomed to being in the air, will show you maneuvers that enable you to fly in different directions.
Is the wind tunnel flyer alone in the flight chamber?
No, an experienced instructor is in the flight chamber during all flights, assisting flyers in finding the right body position and learning the correct movements of their arms and legs. If necessary, he or she can always help the flyer stop the flight.
Do you need any previous knowledge or qualifications?
No, you don’t need any special former training to enjoy body flying in a wind tunnel. Our wind tunnel allows everybody to experience freefall similar to outdoor skydiving. Indoor skydiving is suitable for both adults and children (5 years and older with parental approval) as long as they are in reasonably good physical health and fitness. Each participant receives detailed instructions and ground preparation from our qualified instructors before they experience the sensation of flight.
Do I need a special equipment to fly in the wind tunnel?
No. We provide every participant with the necessary equipment for indoor skydiving. The flight suits we provide are made of a strong, durable fabric and are available in different sizes. We will also lend you a helmet, ear protection and goggles. All you need to bring are clean tennis shoes that fit well and won’t fall off during flight.
Is it possible to fly in the tunnel with more than one person in the flight chamber at the same time?
Experienced skydivers use wind tunnels to practice complex formations involving up to 8 people at once. Inexperienced flyers fly in the flight chamber with only their instructor accompanying them. However, as a flyer becomes more accustomed to being in the air and more capable of performing controlled movements, it becomes possible for him/her to fly together with other participants.
Is it possible to interrupt the flying session?
Yes - at any time, if necessary or requested. Flyers are taught a specific signal during the ground preparation session to let the instructor know they want to be removed from the airflow. In addition, the controller sitting outside the flight chamber can immediately decrease the airflow at any time.
How long can I fly in the wind tunnel?
Just like an outdoor skydiving jump, a flight in a vertical wind tunnel requires some physical effort. With your entire body engaged during the flight your muscles are going to get tired. While 2 minutes of flight time (our minimum flight allotment) will already provide you with an unforgettable experience, we recommend six minutes, as that corresponds to the total freefall time you would experience in an outdoor skydiving course. Every basic movement involved in freefall can be learned during this period of time. For untrained persons, it generally does not make sense to extend the total flight time more than 20 minutes in a single day. Professional flyers often spend more than one hour per day in a vertical wind tunnel. That one hour of training is equivalent to the freefall time of 60 training jumps from 4,000 meters.
Is there a weight limit?
Anyone can fly, up to a recommended maximum weight of 120 kg.
